My dad knew him and lived with him in years gone by. I have now done thirty years in the military. I wish he had spoken more about his experiences. I think his generation would have spoken more had the civilian population been more under standing at the time. He was born on 29th February 1916, not December and died on 6th October 1983. I was, before I retired, a community midwife in Sussex and Chailey was in my ‘patch’. My brother was also married in St Margarets, Lee and I was christened there. My brothers children attended All Saints School in Blackheath. All Saints Church contains a memorial to grandad. He was married, with two children, and had enlisted in December 1915, being posted to France in the Spring of 1916 (exact date unknown). John Edward Griffiths had been gassed in the early hours of 31st August 1916 when a planned release of gas from the British lines to cover a raid on the German trenches went wrong and saw the gas blown back onto their own lines. 1 man was killed in action and 2 others would later die of wounds and/or gas poisoning. 11 others (including Pte. Many years after WW1 and after he was widowed he moved back south to be closer to his sister. He was the son of Mr & Mrs William Funnell Saunders, Chailey, Sussex (Born at Brighton and came from Canada to serve) There's no other Henry Saunders of the Sussex Rgt. buried there. <br />For all I know Sgt. George Saunders, L/8389 who was his brother, was killed the same day and he's listed at Thiepval Memorial.
