At
some point, Charles Miles went abroad as the parish magazine notes in December
1917 that he has been wounded. This
information is then repeated up to and including the final published roll call
in July 1919.
Charles
Miles is probably the six year old Charles Robert Miles noted on the 1901
census of England
and Wales
as living at Oaklands Cottage, North Common, Chailey. The household comprised George Miles (aged 47
and working as a carter on a farm), his wife Sarah Ann Miles (aged 44) and
their three children: Emily Elizabeth Miles (aged 12), Edith Nelly Miles (aged
eight), and Charles Robert Miles. The
1901 census also shows a fourteen year old Agnes Lily Miles working as a
general domestic servant at Rush Farm and it seems possible that she was also a
daughter of George and Sarah Ann.
The England and Wales , Civil
Registration Index: 1837-1983 tells us that Charles Miles’ birth was registered
in the December quarter of 1894 at Lewes ,
Sussex . I know nothing else about this man.
